The American first edition of "Tarzan of the Apes" will have "A.C. McClurg" written on the spine and title page. Other reprints will have "A.L. Burt" or "Grosset & Dunlap" written on the spine and title page. There are 3 different states of the first edition for this title. The website, erbfirsts.com has photos and more information on this and all other Edgar Rice Burroughs first edition books.
That things back then are way different than now!! They would use there hands to work.
No is the short answer! As with several of Dick's other novels, Doubleday released an identical Book Club version of A Scanner Darkly shortly after the first edition. A true first should state 'First Edition' on the copyright page, and the code 'G51' should appear on page 216 in the lower right hand corner. Other than that, it's difficult to tell, so take care if you're buying the book off somewhere like eBay - I've seen several sellers (deliberately or otherwise) list it as a first edition when they shouldn't. Always ask about these points before bidding. As I stated earlier, Doubleday often did this with PKD's novels - Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch and Man in the High Castle are two other examples, making collecting Dick first editions a bit of a minefield if you don't know what to look out for. Hope this helps! Ryan
