Che Guevara never traveled to South America, he was born in South America; Rosario, Argentina.
The character is named "Che", which is smething like Everyman in Argentina and it is a sort of narrator/commentator. Given his criticism of Peronism some have identified him with left-wing revolutionary Che Guevara, but that is quite senseless. It was Harold Prince who insisted actors playing Che in the musical tried to resemble Guevera (check Citron, Stephen, Sondheim & Lloyd-Webber: The New Musical (2001). New York: Oxford University Press), but fortunately the movie did not follow that path.
The people who appeared in the Motorcycle Diaries were actors. The movie was a dramatization of a road trip on motorcycle taken by Che Guevara as a young man. It starred Gael Garcia Bernal and Rodrigo De la Serna.

Che Guevara (Marxist leader who worked closely with the Castro brothers) and Eva Perón (Populist leader also known as Evita) have had a significant impact on Argentine history. In the Casa Rosada in the Hall of Independence, there is a picture of Che. Also, in the Cementario de la Recoleta, Eva Perón's mausoleum is one of the main attractions. Other famous/important people from Argentina include Jorge Luis Borges (writer), Cristina Fernández de Kirchner (the country's president), Antonio Seguí (a painter), and Antonio Berni (another painter). I hope this answers your question :D
