Indianapolis was built on the White River because of the incorrect assumption that the river would serve as a major trade artery, but it turned out that the river was too sandy. Jeremiah Sullivan, a judge from the Indiana Supreme Court invented the name Indianapolis.

Indianapolis literally means "Indiana City". Polis is the Greek word for city.
