In 1880, he wrote plays and formed an acting company for the theater that his father had built for him in Richburg, New York. In July 1888, he and wife Maud Gage moved to Aberdeen, Dakota Territory, where he unsuccessfully tried to run a store ka Baum's Bazaar. He then edited The Aberdeen Saturday Pioneer, and wrote the column ka Our Landlady, until the paper failed in 1891. He, his wife, and their four sons moved to Chicago, Illinois, where Baum was a reporter for the Evening Post. He then edited a magazine that promoted store window displays, and worked as a traveling salesman, until 1897. With the success of his Mother Goose in Prose, he turned to a career as a writer. With the success of his Oz books, Baum and his family moved to Hollywood, California.
