The Seven Years War with Britain took a great toll on France's economy, and Louis XVI's weak leadership created further disaster. Firstly, Louis XVI's decision to aid the American Revolution bankrupted France. Secondly, it was very difficult for him to make decisions and therefore he was unable to respond to the famine and bread shortages. The first and second estate, and especially his wife Marie Antoinette lived a superfluous life, while the entire country suffered, and of course this was frowned upon by the third estate. Louis XVI's inability to to make decisions for his country and numerous failed attempts at reforms contributed enormously to the growing crisis in France.
