Mobutu Sese Seko destroyed the economy of Zaire.
Zaire was established as a sovereign state in 1965 when Mobutu Sese Seko, a military officer, took power through a coup d'état, overthrowing the democratically elected government of Patrice Lumumba. Initially known as the Republic of the Congo, Mobutu renamed the country Zaire in 1971 as part of his effort to promote a national identity and assert independence from colonial influences. The name change reflected a broader push for "authenticity" in African nations during the post-colonial era. Zaire remained under Mobutu's authoritarian rule until his ousting in 1997.
Zaire is currently known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The name change occurred in 1997 when Laurent-Désiré Kabila overthrew the Mobutu Sese Seko regime and restored the country's original name, which had been used prior to the Zaire designation adopted in 1971. The DRC is located in Central Africa and is the largest country in sub-Saharan Africa.
Unfortunately, the former Joseph Mobutu became known for being an authoritarian dictator, and a corrupt one at that. He made his money from bribes, embezzlement, and cutting business deals that were both favorable to his government and favorable to himself. While the poor in his country suffered, he was able to maintain one-party rule and become a very wealthy man in the process.
