The Freedmen's Bureau was a U.S. government agency created in 1866, after the Civil War. Its purpose was to provide education, housing, health care, and employment for former slaves. Its activities were strongly opposed by white southerners, who accused the Bureau of organising black rebellions. It operated until June 1873.
