It made Hitler think that the other European powers would not go to war with him no matter what he did and allowed him to make a mockery of the Versailles Peace Treaty
Appeasement was a controversial strategy right out of the gate. Hitler and his German war machine had already broken a number of conventions. Ultimately what defeated the appeasement proposal was the obstinance of Winston Churchill. What deemed it a failure was the invasion of Poland.
Appeasement. (They let Hitler essentially do what he wanted until he invaded Poland).
The Allies (including France and England) had made an agreement with Germany after the first World War called the Treaty of Versailles. Hitler broke the Treaty by doing things like marching troops into the Rhineland in 1936, but the first thing he did when the Nazis came to power in 1933 was build up the army and air force. These things were all forbidden by the Treaty of Versailles, but the Allies used appeasement - the policy of giving in to avoid war - which lead to Hitler taking over Austria and the Sudetenland, then a few months later the rest of Czechoslovakia (as it was called then) and finally Poland, which caused Britain and France to declare war.
They originally practiced the policy of appeasement. This means they gave in to his demands (as in Africa and in the annexation of Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia) to avoid another devastating world war. But they abandoned this policy when Germany invaded Poland.
Hitler saw appeasement as weakness on the part of Britain & France. As long as they didnt use military force to compel him to actually do anything it gave time for him to build the German war machinery. Austria had been annexed in to greater Germany & the Sudeten Germans & then Czechoslovakia itself became part of Germany. And had it stopped there then the world history would be very different. The invasion of Poland was, to Britain & France beyond what they could accept. Even then there was reluctance on the part of the French. The Germans invaded Poland on September 1st 1939 & was told to withdraw. On the 3rd Britain declared war. Appeasement was shown for what it was, foolhardy but well intentioned, empty rhetoric without anything to enforce it. Its lack of determination, backbone if you will, would cost many people their lives in many years to come. but then, the road to hell is paved with good intentions....
It really was not appeasement that lead to war it was the deception by Hitler that angered the nations who signed non-aggression pacts with Hitler. They declared war on him when he attacked Poland (who had not signed a non-aggression pact with Hitler). In truth it was not the violation of appeasement non-aggression pacts that started the war it was the violation of the Treaty of Versailles that incensed the French and Brits. They declared war after Hitler went after Poland with a military force he was not supposed to have and for an aggression he was not supposed to carry out.
Answer this question… European appeasement of German aggression in an effort to avoid conflict
Appeasement seemed to do nothing but encourage him to further acts of aggression. Appeasement is defined as: to yield or concede to the belligerent demands of (a nation, group, person, etc.) in a conciliatory effort, sometimes at the expense of justice or other principles. In other words, just give the bully your lunch money and he will leave you alone. What stopped Hitler was the Allies beating the German nation to pieces.
Appeasement.
It encouraged more agression
Winston Churchill opposed Neville Chamberlain's policy of appeasement because he saw and new what Hitler was doing and new that he was getting stronger, he stood up and said this but was the only one who did so...He didint say appeasement was a bad idea he just thought after Hitler had broken his promises a couple of times he thought that they should have stopped and used aggression and stopped Hitler while they could.
Appeasement
The strategy of giving in to some of Hitler's demands, known as appeasement, was based on the belief that by satisfying his territorial claims and grievances, it would prevent further aggression and maintain peace. This approach aimed to avoid war, especially after the devastating World War I, and buy time for rearmament and preparation for future conflicts. However, appeasement ultimately failed to deter Hitler's ambitions and only emboldened him to pursue further territorial expansion.
