When Bear was 12 years old, they were living at a Countryside house in Minnesota. He was alone at home when an American Black Bear attacked him from behind. Bear quickly attacked the Bear by his bare hands and killed the bear by a rear naked choke. Later that night he was hungry so he cut some meat from the dead bear. He was cooking the meat on a grill when his family arrived. Hence he was named Bear Gryll, the man who killed and cooked the bear on a grill.
