This exerpt comes from Wikipedia under the heading of The Conscription Crisis of 1944. There was a conscription crisis in World War 1 too.*****The Conscription Crisis of 1944 was a political and military crisis following the introduction of forced military service in Canada during World War II. It was similar to the Conscription Crisis of 1917, but was not as politically damaging. Because conscription was declared late in the war, only 2463 conscripted men reached the front lines. Out of these, 79 lost their lives.****So of the men who were drafted in 1944 to fulfill the needs for more troops most remained on the home front. You can see by the excerpt above that very few went to the front lines. It took 9 men to support and supply 1 warrior on the fighting front. So the drafted men ended up being in support and some were trained to fight but the war ended soon after they were ready to fight the Nazis.

Conscription was introduced in Britain by the predominantly Conservative government of Neville Chamberlain in April 1939, a few months before the start of WW2. There was some opposition at the time to introducing compuslory military service in peace time.
Quebec. The lower part of Quebec along the St Lawrence River was once part of New France. When defeated by the British in the 1700's they were allowed to stay and stay they did. That did not mean that they would ever forget their defeat at the hands of the British. That, shall we say dislike, of the British was transferred to Canada when Canada Confederated even though the French were given special status in the Confederation. As a result they do not want to see Canada succeed in certain areas, particularly the military and they sure as heck do not want Canada to spend time and money or French lives on wars helping the British. The World War was seen as helping the British and helping the Canadian Military and conscription would get people of French descent killed for something they did not agree with. Quebec has yet to sign on to the Canadian Institution and would almost certainly resist any moves towards conscription today unless it meant they could have control of all or part of the military created.
During World War II, conscription was a controversial and somewhat divisive step taken by the Canadian government in 1944; however, it did not adversely affect Canada's economy, which experienced a general "boom" as a result of the war. For one thing, the actual conscription enforced on Canada's population was quite small; it also occurred only during the last year of the war. For another, Canadian women (similar to women throughout the western nations) became more active in the work-force as a result of the war-time pressures.

During World War I, Canadian conscription was a contentious issue, with strong divisions between English-speaking Canadians, who largely supported it, and French-speaking Canadians, who opposed it due to fears of alienation and the belief that it disproportionately affected their communities. In World War II, while conscription was again controversial, the context had shifted; many Canadians accepted it as a necessity, though tensions remained, particularly in Quebec. Overall, conscription highlighted regional, linguistic, and cultural divides within Canada, shaping national identity and political discourse.

In World War II, English Canadians were generally more supportive of conscription compared to their French Canadian counterparts. This support was largely due to their stronger ties to Britain and the belief in the necessity of military service to support the war effort. In contrast, many French Canadians opposed conscription, viewing it as an infringement on their rights and expressing a desire to avoid being drawn into the conflict. This divide contributed to significant tensions within Canadian society during the war.
Conscription was used in World War 1, when men wouldn't join the army the Government used conscription as a way of making men join. They had absolutely no choice.

Sometimes you didn't have a choice - the United States began using conscription in 1940. Conscription is, in case you didn't know, mandatory service in the armed forces if you are sound of mind and body. The United States no longer practices conscription. Other men - for example, Canadian men - did not need to be drafted. They volunteered in the armed forces to protect their homeland from foreign threats.
Conscription is another word for the draft. Men were required to join the military/navy or RFC and serve.
