While on his hajj to mecca he gave a large quantity of his gold to random people he encountered on his way and this made gold depreciate in value for 12 years and this destabilized the traders that traded gold because the price of gold decreased and if they wanted salt in return so they trade for a different resource then they couldn't get their desired amount.
