In 1850's people worked in farming, manufacturing, mining, teaching, doctors, pharmacists, mechanics, engineers, carpenters, masons, millers, bakers, bankers, printers, plumbers - in fact, many of the same jobs as today that do not involve electronics or electricity. While there were no telephones, airplanes or cars, there WERE railroads and the telegraph.
