Within the Death Note universe, the only way to kill a death god is if they sacrifice themselves to save a human. If a human is alreadysupposed to die in a certain way and the shinigami interferes the death god will die. Light was supposed to die but in order to keep her promise to Gelus, Rem had to keep Misa safe and happy. Had Light died, Rem would not have kept her promise thus why she interfered at the cost of her own life.

If L continued his 'plans' of testing the death note, they will find out that the 13 day rule is fake, which means that Light and Misa are suspicious again. To stop L from finding out that Misa and Light are Kira, Rem needed to kill L. And Light knew it all along.
