Betty Allen was given a slave named Tony as a wedding gift from her mother. Betty married John Allen. ( Betty was a Chickasaw Indian) John Allen had gotten into debt with a man. The man wanted John to pay the debt and John tried to take Tony from Betty. They went to court and because Betty was an Indian, the Chickasaw law prevailed over Mississippi law. It gave Betty Allen and all women the right to own property and the husband could not take his wife's property. Mississippi was the 1st state in the nation to reconize women's rights to own property. Betty lived in Toccopola, Mississippi, Pontotoc County. There is a historical marker at the junction of Toccopola junction road and Hwy 6 East in Pontotoc, MS. I know this because my grandmother, along with the Women's Study Club in Toccopola, and the Toccoppola High School got a monument and the marker put up for all to see. The DAR was also involved with getting the historical marker.

How did mill towns change the lives of women in the 1800s?

Slowly. The industrial cities needed more women workers, so more women were earning their own living. The Married Womens Property Act (1882) decreed that a married woman's property was her own, and did not automatically belong to her husband. This ended the habit of fortune-hunting on the part of cynical men.
