The Iroquois Confederacy first began when five different Native American nations, the Cayuga, the Onondaga, the Mohawk, the Seneca, and the Oneida came together against their common enemies, to strengthen their tribes.

Each tribe had its representative. If a tribe had a conflict, the Iroquois Confederacy representatives came together and discussed it until they could reach a compromise. Usually these compromises worked.

The Iroquois Confederacy was a form of government among the more Southern Eastern Woodlands Tribes.
