They speak different but related languages in the Athabaskan language family. One way they are different is the Language. The Navajo home is a permanent dwelling called a hoghan. Most of the many Apache groups lived in more temporary dwellings. As far back as we can know, Navajo have grown corn and squash and beans. It is presumed they gained these technologies form the neighboring Pueblos peoples sometime in the 900-1100 CE. Some Apache groups grew corn but tended to rely more on wild food and be more mobile. After the 1540's the Navajo gained sheep and goats and horses from the Spanish. They never liked cattle as much. The Apache never really did much herding and raising of animals except horses. Philosophically, cosmologically and theologically there are some similarities and with the surrounding Pueblos people too, but in general one could say the Navajo Hataałii (singers or "medicine-men") system is more elaborated and complex and the concept of Hozho is foremost with the Navajo. The Navajo became famous for their weaving, which it is thought they learned from the Pueblo people (Navajo women weave, in the Pueblos men weave) and the Apache didn't do as much weaving. The Navajo picked up silversmithing from the Spanish and became famous for that too. In general, when the Navajo have come into contact with a new idea or technology they have taken some parts and made it theirs and elaborated on it while regecting other parts ( like cattle raising). In general the Apache have been more conservative, holding on to what are thought to be older traditions. They also live in different areas in the SW USA with some but not a lot of overlap. On the whole the Navajo have lived to the north and west of the Apache and at higher elevations.

The also have very different experiences in there collision with first Spanish and then Mexican and American Governments. The Navajo had very little contact with these colonial powers except for raids and trading at the eastern edges of their lands. Then in 1864 they were attacked and defeated by the US Army led by Kit Carson who used scorched earth tactics (killing animals and burning corps and fruit trees) and forced into the Long Walk to Fort Sumner. There they were held for four years in terrible conditions but allowed to return to their homelands in 1868.

The different Apache groups had different conflicts first with the Spanish and Mexicans and then with the US. They kept the Spanish out of their lands starting in the 1700s. They were at war with the US colonial powers from about 1849 until the last group with Geronimo surrendered in 1886. He and his people were then kept as POWs in prison until 1914 (26 years). Some fighting continued in places until 1924. Other Apache groups surrendered as early as 1875.

They are thought to have entered the southwest later than other peoples. The most current ideas for dates of when the came is about 900 to 1100 years ago. This date corresponds closely to Navajo oral history of the creation of the Navajo clans.

Both the Navajo and Apache tend to live spread out over the landscape. But so do other people like the Ute and the Yavapai. The pueblo people lives in compact towns in contrast. The Navajo grow crops and raise sheep. Most Apache did not. The Pueblo people raised crops but did not take to sheep herding as much.
