The Spaniards increased their dedication to the settlement of Texas. They began to build mission and Presidios. Spain and France had very different reason for interacting with the Native Americans and for settling in Texas. These differences eventually lead to a mutual ignoring of each other.

The mission system was built the full length of the state to be a day or two ride from each other. The route was called the El Camino Real. The 600 mile road connecting the 21 Spanish missions, 4 presidios, and sub missions. Northern California was a very important part of Spanish California. Spain had settled San Francisco with its natural harbor and Monterey made the seat ofgovernment . The one area of the state that the Spanish didn't like to enter was the San Joaquin Valley. It was dry, hot, with little water, and Native Americans living on Tule lake and along rivers. They avoided coming through the area and there is no missions in the valley.
