America changed in many ways over that time period. Slavery was becoming more prominent in the South after Eli Whitney introduced the cotton gin in 1794. If you can believe it, slavery was actually on the decline until that time! Slavery then increased ten fold. Uncle Tom's Cabin exploited slavery to millions and energized anti-slavery in the North while provoking anger in the South. The South seceded from the nation in 1861.

The civil war was probably the biggest change in America but it also became very industrialized as immigrants began to move to the US and as several inventions (involving steam) were made. This also helped expand the United States westwards.
