There are a number of ways people can "farm" in the desert.

Many deserts while technically labeled as deserts, do in fact receive small amounts of rain every year. In some cases this is sufficient to support small populations of wild grasses and shrubs. These can be used as fodder for sheep and goats. This type of "farming" is found through northern Africa, portions of South America, Southern Africa and in large areas of Australia.

Other methods of desert farming includes organised agriculture. Again there are a number of examples of "farming the desert" where, although the land is arid, water is available from a distant source, this water is then piped or fed by canal to agricultural areas. Examples would include the large wheat production areas of North Sudan and Southern Egypt which are fed from the Nile; even Las Vagas could be said to fall into this category.

Other organised desert agriculture projects are conducted in greenhouses situated in arid regions. Here because water is either in short supply, or expensive to supply they often use hydroponic systems. Examples are found throughout the Middle East, Australia and Central America.
