The show's producers select and invite people to be on the show. They typically look for people with different backgrounds and different types of status. In a 2014 interview, producer Ron Wade stated - "A right mix of celebrities is essential to the success of the show." A the end of the show it will show a telephone number and website to visit if you would like to be on the show.

First, you have to be someone who is famous (duh). You can enter a waiting list, which I believe is on the DWTS website. Then, they pick the top people on the list, and if they do not want to do it, they go down the waiting list until they find the max number of stars.
