Believe it or not, unpopular kids play a role in this, too. The more excess nonpopular kids there are, the more popular a particular (athletic) clique becomes. The outweighing of dislike by envy among the nonpopulars makes for a clique to peak at extreme popularity.

Popularity is an extremely hard concept to grasp, but in a nutshell, you must be athletic, have athletic friends, and hang out with those athletic friends in groups, and laugh really loud. The chances of a kid becoming popular is virtually 0 in elementary school (because of the lack of nonpopular students, so everyone in elementary school is all at the same level, except for the extremely athletic kids, where they are half popular because they are known, but do not share the full characteristics of popularity as real popular kids do), 2 in 25 in middle school, and [varies too greatly in high school to make a statistic]. High School varies so astically that it cannot have statistics to display.

The reason for the statistics is to how that Popular Kids become popular out of the rare chance that they will form a clique. They do not diliberately try to become popular, as you think, but they just become popular out of the slim chance shown above, where the prime gronigschool, here the clique moves to high school. They become popular in middle school, and carry on their popularity and glamour in high school, where 1 in 5 cliques are doomed to fail in high school, but the other 4 became popular in middle school, as explained in the numbered steps above.
