Movie StudiosI'll make an educated guess. When a movie studio wants to make a movie, they can either come up a story themselves or buy one from another person or company. Well, movies and stories have one thing in common, and that is to make money. So when screenwriters (they write screenplays, similar to a play script) or movie authors want to sell an idea, they look to movie studios to see who would be willing to pay the most money. In essence, they typically sell to the highest bidder. If the movie is a hit, they'll usually enter into contract with the screenwriter or author to make additional sequels. In essence, when a movie studio has paid an author or screenwriter, they buy the "right" to make the movie. This right makes it so that only that studio can make the movie and no one else can make the movie. Some movie studios sometimes try to make and market cheap knock offs of their popular film counterparts. They change the name obviously, alter the main character a little bit, and sell it as an "original" idea, and most of the time it is. It is just that the cheap knock off usually parallels the popular film it's made after. In the past lawsuits have been filed against other movie studios for "stealing the movie", in which the knock off that's produced usually mirrors the popular film as I stated above. Some have actually won suits, while other judges have ruled in favor off the knock off producing studio.

Did flip Wilson own the rights to his show?

After years of no interest in rerunning episodes of the Flip Wilson Show, Flip himself decided to buy the rights to his series from NBC in the 1990s. He brilliantly decided to edit them down to 30 minutes, making them more attractive for reruns. After several years of working on them, they finally were broadcast on TV Land.
