Catching a throwing knife is an advanced and dangerous maneuver that should only be attempted by highly skilled individuals who have received proper training in knife throwing. Attempting to catch a throwing knife without the necessary expertise can lead to serious injuries. If you are an experienced knife thrower and have the skill to catch a throwing knife, here are some general steps to follow:

Safety First: Always prioritize safety. Ensure you are in a controlled environment, and there are no people or obstructions in the path of the knife.

Proper Knife Selection: Use knives specifically designed for throwing, as they have the right balance and construction for this purpose. Regular knives are not suitable.

Training: Receive training from an experienced instructor or engage in extensive practice to develop the skills required for knife throwing and catching.

Wear Protective Gear: When attempting to catch a throwing knife, wear appropriate protective gear, including gloves to protect your hands and safety glasses to safeguard your eyes.

Start Simple: Begin with simple throws and catches at a short distance. Gradually increase the difficulty and distance as you become more proficient.

Catch by the Handle: Attempt to catch the knife by the handle rather than the blade. Catching the blade can lead to serious injuries.

Practice Timing: Focus on timing and coordination. Understanding the speed and rotation of the knife is crucial to a successful catch.

Safety Measures: Be prepared for the possibility of missing the catch. Always have a secure target board or backstop to absorb the knife's impact if you fail to catch it.

Focus and Concentration: Maintain a high level of focus and concentration during the throw and catch. Distractions or lack of attention can lead to accidents.

Avoid Risky Moves: Do not attempt flashy or risky catches that involve spinning or acrobatics unless you are extremely experienced and confident in your abilities.

Advanced Techniques: If you want to explore more advanced techniques, seek guidance from experienced professionals in the field of knife throwing.

Catching a throwing knife is considered a stunt and is not recommended for amateurs or those who are not well-trained in knife throwing. If you are new to knife throwing, it's advisable to concentrate on target practice and building your skills before attempting any complex maneuvers. Always prioritize safety, and take the necessary precautions when engaging in knife throwing activities.

First of all, you need to know how to hold a kunai throwing knife. To hold it perfectly, place your index finger, middle finger and ring fingers at the very center of the handle of the knife. Now, place your thumb on the center of the other side of the handle.

Get in position of throwing. Know the throwing line and then take a step back. Never step your foot on the throwing line or ahead of it. This is foul. Your feet must be behind the line.

The distance from you and your target matters a lot. Greater distance allows better rotation, and hence, there are more chances that the knife sticks into the target.

Stand in a way that the weaker shoulder is facing the target. For instance, if you throw with your right hand, your left shoulder must be facing the target. Similarly, if you throw with your left hand, your right shoulder must be facing the target.

Now, get in a position like a Baseball thrower. Take a small step towards the throwing line with the front foot. In other words, stretch yourself towards the target to some extent.

Now, use complete force to throw a knife. Throw it as hard as you can. Remember the aim is to make the knife stick into the target. A lack of power behind the throw won’t do. So, spend some energy and throw the knife using maximum effort.

For a complete knife rotation, keep the kunai knife in a horizontal position throughout the throwing process. It must be horizontal to the target so that it rotates well before sticking into the target.

Release the knife and make sure to follow through. Keep your arms completely extended and then let go of the knife.

Follow these steps, and you are on your way to becoming an expert knife thrower.

Significant Safety Rules to Follow!

Safety is extremely important. Before you learn how to throw a knife, make sure to learn the safety rules.

A kunai knife has a sharp blade, and it can be dangerous for you and your surroundings. Hence, to prevent injuries and dangerous incidents, follow the safety rules. Here are some significant instructions:

Practice away from the public places or away from pets and people

Place your targets away from cars, house and gas grills

If there are people around you, let them know what you are doing and warn them from getting near you

Use the right equipment, including some safety equipment

Be careful and see around you if anyone is throwing knife

Try throwing knives one by one, and don’t get in line of a throw

Cover your knives with leather sheaths while carrying them

Keep safety as your first priority!

You should be an experienced professional before you attempt to catch a throwing knife.

While this definitely qualifies as a "Don't Try This At Home" sort of thing, there are specific techniques that can be used to catching a knife. But be aware, they also require special techniques in throwing the knife too. Just because you can catch knives in some instances does not mean you will be able to do so under all circumstances and could very easily get yourself hurt or killed. And even if you follow the appropriate steps and precautions, you can still get hurt/killed. Be VERY careful.

There are two primary throws with a knife: The first is to oneself, like if you are juggling. The trick to this throw and catch is to practice A LOT with non-sharp objects, move on to knives with dulled blades and then finally to sharpened knives. You need to pay special attention to how the knife moves while it is in the air, how much force to give the throw so that it makes a specific number of rotations in the air (start with one, then go up from there) so that you can be certain of the orientation of the blade when it meets your hand.

The other throw, between two people, can take a variety of forms:

The first is again a juggling between two people, and the rules are the same as above. Practice a lot, move up slowly and make sure you and your partner are in good communication.

The second is to have someone throw the knife at you (like target practice) and being able to catch it. This is almost ALWAYS a trick involving fake knives or the thrower only pretends to throw the blade and the "victim" reveals a similar looking blade. With proper timing and enough distraction of the audience, this, like all magic tricks, is a fairly effective trick, completely safe but can be "dressed up" to make the audience think there is an element of danger.

The third, being able to catch an actual thrown knife, I believe, is too dangerous to be presented in a public forum and is extremely risky under the most ideal circumstances.

However, it also carries inherent risks, and it is essential to approach it with caution. Here are some factors to consider regarding knife throwing safety: Training: Proper training and instruction are crucial. Beginners should seek guidance from experienced and qualified instructors. Learning the correct techniques and safety protocols can minimize the risk of accidents. Safety Equipment: Wear appropriate safety equipment, including safety glasses to protect your eyes from ricocheting knives or fragments. Designated Area: Knife throwing should take place in a designated and controlled area, preferably with a sturdy backstop or target board. Ensure there is a safe distance between the thrower and the target. Clear Range: Make sure the range is clear of people, pets, or any obstructions that could be struck by a thrown knife. Inspection: Regularly inspect your throwing knives to ensure they are in good condition. Any damaged or compromised knives should not be used. Non-Throwing Hand: Keep your non-throwing hand and body well away from the path of the knife at all times. Practice: Develop your skills through consistent practice, starting with simple and safe techniques before attempting more advanced throws. Solo Practice: Knife throwing is best practiced solo, as throwing knives while others are nearby can be dangerous. Alcohol and Substance Use: Avoid throwing knives under the influence of alcohol or substances that impair judgment and coordination. Supervision: If teaching knife throwing to children or beginners, closely supervise them and ensure they follow safety guidelines. No Trick Shots: Avoid attempting trick shots or risky throws that may increase the likelihood of accidents. Emergency Response: Have a plan for responding to accidents or injuries. Be familiar with basic first aid procedures. It's important to recognize that knife throwing is a skill that requires time and practice to develop proficiency. Accidents can happen, even to experienced practitioners, so it's essential to prioritize safety at all times.
