You need to know your character, first of all, and how they will react to the pain. Is it physical or mental pain? Mental I can't help you with but physical I can. You need to know the injury you're going to have the character get and then research it, ask people who've had the injury, etc etc.... Then you will better know how to describe it. For instance, I have never broken a rib but my character did so I had to research that a lot! And from their... just use your writing skills. Don't go nuts with it, just make sure the reader will know it's there. For broken ribs, as an example, (done quickly without editing so excuse the mess,)
She struggled to get up, holding her right hand against her left side, carefully raising to her knees without twisting her body. It hurt to breath. It hurt to stay upright. It hurt to move. She slowly got to her feet and took a step. She winced as the jostling involved caused sharp, stabbing pains up and down her entire left side.
So you see, you need to know here to mention it, but it's pretty easy- just like any other writing really.
