She believes Kit is a witch because of her unconventional behavior, defiance of Puritan norms, and association with Hannah Tupper, who is ostracized for being a Quaker and rumored to be a witch. Goodwife Cruff's fear and ignorance lead her to wrongly accuse Kit of witchcraft.

First few chaptersKatherine (a.k.a Kit) is moving from Barbados an island to Wethersfield, a town in one of the 13 colonies. In the first chapter we find out she is on a ship, the Dolphin, sailing to the Puritan community. She meets Nat Eaton, the captain's son, who tells her they aren't very far from land. The ship lands in the town, Saybrook, and some people get off. Kit gets off just to see America. A lady, the Goodwife Cruff, and her husband and daughter, Providence, get on the ship. When they set sail, Kit notices Providence is crying because she dropped her doll in the water. Kit jumps in since she knew how to swim and gets the doll. She notices this is a mistake because no women knows how to swim here. Kit also meets a man named John who is traveling to Wethersfield to be taught by a Reverend so John can own a church. Kit is moving to Wethersfield because her Grandfather (who owned a plantation and was very rich) died. Kit decided to move in with her Aunt, Rachel Wood, and Uncle, Matthew Wood, without telling them. Kit arrives at the Wood's "boring and plain" home and knocks on the door. Aunt Rachel opens it but gets frightened because she thinks Kit is Kit's own late mother. Kit assures Rachel it is Kit and Rachel is overjoyed and lets Kit in. Kit meets her stern, Uncle Matthew, and cousins, the younger Judith, and Mercy whose leg is broken. When Kit tells them she is there to stay Matthew is outraged and goes to work.
