Follow the icon on the map marked 'Damascus' and eventually you'll make it. Travelling by horse can be faster, but synchronising with all the viewpoints in the travel map is a good idea to avoid unnecessary detours.
Also after a mission is completed the screen should darken and two options will appear in the bottom-left corner offering a fast-forward route and normal travel from where ever Altaír is to the next city in the storyline.
