In the beginning of the novel, prior to the official introduction between D'Artagnan and Athos, Athos was severely injured to his shoulder during a duel. Athos reported to the Captain of the Musketeer (Monsieur de Tréville), while D'Artagnan was already having an audience with the Captain.

Upon exiting the building to locate an ennemy (The man from Meung), D'Artagnan headbutt Athos' shoulder by accident, causing great deal of pain to Athos. D'Artagnan refused to apologize to Athos more than once, which cause the insult.
