When Lord Voldemort went to kill Harry Potter, James Potter (Harry's father) tried to hold off Voldemort and told Lily Potter (Harry's mother) to run and protect Harry. However, Voldemort killed James and moved on to Lily. She pleaded with him and risked her life to save Harry. When Voldemort told her to move aside, she refused, and he killed her with "Avada Kedavra" which is the unforgivable curse that kills people. When he tried to murder Harry, it backfired and Voldemort became powerless. Lily's love formed a protection over Harry. She used love, a power Voldemort never had, the oldest known form of magic, to keep Harry safe. She died to protect him, and Harry lived. This is why Harry had to live with the Dursley family, because since Petunia Dursley (Harry's aunt) was the only living relative of Lily, the power is in her blood as well, which keeps the protective charm on Harry.
