There is a line that Dove may not cross, and she will play her parts on one side of the line at a time. Then digital computers make it look like they're in the same room. For scenes where they have to hug, or something like that, they will get a person who looks somewhat like the character from the back, and show only the other character actually being played by Dove. Same is for the other character.

It's a film technique where Dove Cameron films as Liv in one scene and then as Maddie in another scene and then they will paste it together and in cases where Liv and Maddie have to physically interact with one another such as shaking hands or hugging they have Dove Cameron playing one of her roles and they have a stand-in double stand in for the other role.
