In order to disguise themselves, Johnny buys a bottle of peroxide and orders Ponyboy to cut, wash and bleach his hair blond. Ponyboy is extremely proud of his hair and is initially reluctant to do as Johnny says, however he gives in and describes his new look as 'a blasted pansy.' Johnny has a dark complexion and so he just washes the grease out of his hair and cuts it.
