The green skin color for which Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, is known hurts her with those who are superficial and intolerant of anything other than the sporting of a certain income level, look and way of being. For example, she has a difficult time with the cliquish, selective, snobbish popular people at Shiz University. Galinda, who becomes Glinda the Good Witch, is a rare in-crowd member who gets past the different appearance, look and way of being. Likewise, Elphaba's love interest goes in a lucky direction. For Fiyero likewise appreciates the difference. So Elphaba's skin color helpsher stand out as a unique person with an outlook and a personality that isn't mass-made. Consequently, she gains good friendship with Glinda, and love with her Prince.
