Alcatraz Island is about 3/4 mile away from the city of San Francisco, between San Francisco and Marin. As a prison, it was considered to be nearly escape-proof, because of the cold water and rapid tidal currents through the Golden Gate. Several convicts did escape from the island, but none are known to have survived the trip.

The old prison on Alcatraz is currently a tourist attraction. You can take tours from Pier 39 in San Francisco.
