The population growth in world cannot be drastically brought down and we are not sure if the earth would continue to exist.so there is a need to explore and colonise space. The success of astronauts along with the success of researches on space is important for this.

It depends on your point of view. From a science perspective, NASA's Apollo Program was one of the most important programs ever, it discovered many things. From a polititcal perspective, it was a huge triumph. There are those, however, that feel, while impressive, they were a waste of money and resources that could have been spent improving life on Earth.
