It all depends on your idea of a 'play'. There are plays with scripts that continue for hundreds of pages; there are plays that consist of a single repeated word or line. Longer plays generally take longer to write, if they are composed thoughtfully.

In short, a play can take a few minutes or it can take a lifetime. Some playwrights die without having edited their works to their satisfaction.

In general, however, a play usually takes a few months or years to write.
