The first McDonald's restaurant in New Zealand opened at Cobham Court, Porirua on 7 June 1976. The original restaurant closed in 2009 ans was replaced with a new restaurant on nearby Kenepuru Drive.
This is correct, I know because I was the first customer, I was 4 at the time.

And I can remember the "Pie Cart" a mobile fast food outlet back certainly before 1950.

The first McDonald's restaurants built from the ground up to open in New Zealand were in New Lynn and Lower Hutt in 1978.
