What is the first Hellboy about?

So, during the movie; Rasputin's throwing stuff into Hellboy's way to slow him down while he destroys all of mankind, but Hellboy beats everything & catches up to Rasputin where Hellboy kills him as well as his supposed god that lived within Rasputin's body.
