Hopper, who died of cancer on May 29, 2010 at the age of 74, never won an Academy Award. He, Peter Fonda and Terry Southern were nominated for Best Original Screenplay for "Easy Rider" (1969), an independent movie that did big box-office numbers.

Several years later, Hopper was nominated as Best Supporting Actor for his performance as an alcoholic assistant coach in "Hoosiers" (1985). But many observers believe he should have been nominated that year for his role as sadistic villain Frank Booth in David Lynch's "Blue Velvet."
