"One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975) was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won five. It was the second of three films to sweep the Top Five categories (Picture, Director, Actor, Actress and Screenplay). The only other films to duplicate the feat were "It Happened One Night" (1934) and "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991). The 1975 nominations were as follows (Oscar wins in bold):

  • Best Picture (Michael Douglas, Saul Zaentz, producers).
  • Best Director (Milos Forman).
  • Best Actor (Jack Nicholson).
  • Best Actress (Louise Fletcher).
  • Best Supporting Actor (Brad Dourif).
  • Adapted Screenplay (Laurence Hauben, Bo Goldman).
  • Original Music Score (Jack Nitzsche).
  • Cinematography (Haskell Wexler, Bill Butler).
  • Film Editing (Richard Chew, Lyzee Klingman and Sheldon Kahn).
