It varies a great deal. For example, "The Big Bang Theory" on CBS airs around 22 episodes per season. But "Falling Skies" on TNT airs only 10 episodes.

On Network TV, typically Season 5 is when a show could be sold into syndication so there should be around 85 to 100 episodes for that to happen, but as the first answer says, it does indeed vary when you throw in cable.
