There were 16 rigid wooden lifeboats, each one capable of holding 60 people, as well as 4 collapsible Englehardt boats that had solid wooden keels and waterproof canvas sides that were held up by wooden props.

All but one of the Englehardts were used (the remaining one could not be released from it's fixings on the roof of the Titanic and went down with the ship). When the survivors were rescued by the RMS Carpathia, thirteen of the rigid boats were salvaged and taken to New York, where they were docked at the White Star Line's pier and subsequently returned to England for use on other White Star liners. The remaining three rigids, together with the three Englehardts, were set adrift, although one of the rigids was upturned and another one waterlogged. All these probably eventually sank when the sea grew rough.
