I believe the costume was a make shift body with rubber body parts and maybe some computer generated affects. . Probably with a remote for the mechanical parts..like the eyes and neck and the glowing red heart. I remember readng that a little boy was inside ET for walking and moving arms parts. Don't know how much of this is true.
