There have been thousands of ships that have sunk or been wrecked in the Atlantic. One famous wreck is the RMS Titanic
Harland and Wolff, the renowned shipbuilding company in Belfast, constructed several famous ships, including the RMS Titanic, RMS Britannic, RMS Olympic, the RMS Majestic, and the HMS Belfast. The Titanic and her sister ships, Olympic and Britannic, were part of the White Star Line's fleet and are among the most well-known ocean liners in history. The HMS Belfast served as a Royal Navy light cruiser during World War II and is now a museum ship. Each of these vessels played a significant role in maritime history.
There were at least 3, but they were either unaware of the catastrophe or unable to respond in time to save most of the victims, many of whom were immersed in ice-cold water. The RMS Carpathia was the closest and eventually rescued many of those in the Titanic's lifeboats, arriving at the scene about an hour and a half after Titanic went down, or about 4 AM on April 15, 1912. It returned to New York with the survivors. The SS Californian was thought to have been within sight of Titanic, but it is possible that it was the SS Mount Temple, which arrived at the sinking site after the Carpathia had completed rescue operations. All three ships were later sunk by German ships during World War I.Other ships had passed nearby the day before and warned of the ice fields that sank Titanic : SS Amerika, RMS Caronia, RMS Baltic, and the steamer Mesaba.

RMS stands for Royal Mail Ship. Large British shipping companies won contracts to carry mail to the far extremes of the British Empire. These ships names were prefixed with RMS instead of SV (Sailing Vessel) as in the first mails ships and later SS (steamship). Both the Titanic and the Lousitania of the White Star Line were RMS ships.
