There were 2261 people on board for the Titanic's maiden voyage though she could have taken over 3000. Of these 705 survived and 1556 died- mostly through hypothermia and not drowning as is usually thought. It would take about 30 minutes for someone to become unconscious in water that cold and of course then they could no longer hold on to lifeboats or other pieces of flotsam! (Sorry Jack -aka Leonardo in the Titanic film, you took too long realistically to die!)
