The first television broadcasts were started by the BBC in 1929. There was a choice of just one channel at the time and even that was part time.
By the end of the 1930s, the BBC were transmitting more content but still not 24 hours and still just a single channel. Other European broadcasters had similar arrangements of just a single channel and not 24 hour.
In the US, television broadcasts didn't start until 1939. For many years there was ABC, CBS and NBC. There was also, early in the fifties, another network named "DuMont", but it was short-lived. Jackie Gleason's program was originally on the DuMont network.
