The 8mm video format, or Video8, was first used in the 1980s. It was in 1985 that the Video8 Handycam released by Sony became a commercial success and grew in use and popularity.
Hi8 should be backward-compatible with all cameras that use Video8.
Sony advertises their EVO-250 Hi8 Video8 8mm VCR as the smallest vcr.Although it's now osbselete it only weighs 1 pound 7 ounces and is designed for portable applications
NO you cannot. AS video8 is digital and VHS is analog so they dont work together. The adaptor will only work with VHS-C tapes. What I would recommend is using a video transfer service to convert your video 8 tapes into a digital format. Watch and edit the digital files on your computer or get the tapes transferred to DVDs. StashSpace.Com does a good job at this, costs $7 for the transfer to digital and $10-15 for DVDs. http://www.stashspace.com/video-transfer/video-dvd-transfer.stm
The question here reads, can you play a Digital 8mm tape on an analog camcorder. The answer to this is NO. An analogue Video8 or Hi8 camcorder will display nothing useful if playing a tape recorded with the Digital8 standard. Only a Digital8 camcorder can play a Digital8 recording. In many cases (but certainly not all) such a Digital8 camcorder will also play analogue Video8 and Hi8 tapes. Be aware that sometimes a person will have used a tape branded as Digital8 to make recordings with a Video8 or Hi8 camcorder, and in this case the recordings ARE analogue. Another option is to convert your 8mm tapes to digital or DVDs. There are a lot of 8mm video transfer services out there that can do this for cheap. StashSpace.Com is a good one, costs $6.95 per tape and they let you watch and edit online for free. Outside USA, try a Google search for "digital8 to DVD transfers UK" or similar.

Only a VHS or S-VHS machine can play VHS tapes. Even then there may be restrictions around the television system, for example not all PAL (European) VHS machines can play NTSC (USA) recordings, and very few PAL models would play SECAM (France) recordings. There are also considerations around recording speed. Most modern VHS machines will play Long Play tapes, but since Long Play is not part of the VHS format, they may not play particularly well. In NTSC countries there are also EP recordings, but this system was not widely available in the PAL markets. Furthermore, certain time-lapse recordings from security type recorders will not play on a normal VHS player. Of course, if the machine is not VHS based at all, then the tape will not play (and in almost all cases will not even physically fit onto) a non VHS machine. Formats apart from VHS include Betamax, Betacam, Umatic, Video8/Hi8, miniDV/DV/DVCAM, V2000, MII, and dozens more besides.
