The Amazon was formed during the Cretaceous Period, between 65 million and 145 million years ago, when the South American and African tectonic plates separated and passed each other. It originally flowed from east to west, as established by sediment studies. As the eastern mountain ranges eroded, the Andes were thrust up. That eventually caused a reversal of flow, to the present west to east direction.
