When author Thomas Harris finished writing the novel this film is based on, he sent copies to director Jonathan Demme, Jodie Foster, and Anthony Hopkins. The screenplay was rewritten at least 15 times because of dissatisfaction by Demme and Foster over new character directions. In the end, neither Demme nor Foster would stay with the film.
