The end of Apartheid in South Africa was marked by its first democratic election in 1994, after which the African National Congress was voted in as the ruling party. Nelson Mandela became president of the party and therefore the country shortly after being released from jail (on Robin Island). He had been held there for his participation in the struggle against apartheid.
