In "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," Area 51 is portrayed as a top-secret military base where the U.S. government stores alien artifacts. The film features a climactic scene involving the discovery of a crashed alien spacecraft and the exploration of extraterrestrial themes. Chronologically, the first time he uses a whip is when he was a young man. In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), young Indiana uses a whip to fend off a lion he encounters on the train in the first scene. However, it is in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) where he first uses a whip. He uses it in the first scene to grab the revolver out of the hand of one of his guides just before entering the cave.

In the beginning of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade(1989), young Indiana is running on the top of train cars. He falls through one of them and encounters a male African lion. He uses a bullwhip to fend off the lion. The whip smacks him on the chin and gives him his famous scar. However, this is not the whip he uses in the various scenes of each movie. The scene only serves to introduce how he came about using a whip in the earlier movies. There were many different kinds used in all of the movies.
