I will give three answers to this question - one is the evidence-based answer from science and two answers from religion. Other religious answers come from sources outside the Book of Genesis.

  1. Science tells us that over a period of billions of years, single cell organisms gradually evolved into the more complex creatures from which fish are descended. Some species of fish became able to survive out of water and even move across dry land (lungfish are a modern fish that illustrate this). Eventually, their descendants did not need to return to the water and thus became our first land animals.
  2. God spoke animals into existence on the sixth day, just before he created the first man (Genesis 1:24-27).
  3. God created the first man out of the dirt. After this, and because he thought it not good for man to be alone, he fashioned each animal out of dirt and brought them to the man to give names (Genesis 2:7,19).
